Prizes and Odds of Winning

You win prizes by matching the numbers you picked to the winning ones drawn. There are fixed prizes in eight of the nine divisions, so you know exactly how much you will receive. The only prize that changes is the jackpot, which starts at a minimum of $40 million (approximately R560 million) and rolls over to the next draw when it is not won. The jackpot is shared if there are multiple winners.

The following table shows the prizes you can win, what they’re worth with each of the Power Play multipliers, and the odds of winning:

USA Powerball prizes are subject to differing levels of tax depending on where you play the game. For players in the USA, a federal tax of at least 24 percent is withheld on any prize greater than $5,000, while some states also withhold their own tax on winnings. If you play the game from South Africa, you could also be taxed on Powerball prizes. Go to the Taxes page for more information.

Annuity vs. Cash

98% of Powerball jackpot winners chose to take the cash option. Or to put it another way, only 4 winners in the last 13 years (2003 — 2016) chose the annuity option.

If you win the Powerball jackpot, you have the option of taking an annuity — an annual payment over 30 instalments — or a cash lump sum paid to you in full. You’ll see there’s quite a difference between the two. This is because the cash lump sum pays out whatever’s in the jackpot fund, whereas the annuity includes both the cash sum and the interest generated by investing it over the next 29 years. The value of the annuity option also has the added benefit of increasing by 5% annually.

The cash option is taxed in full when it is paid out — and taking the annuity option can also mean that more of the prize money is taxed at a lower rate over time. You can also leave the annuity to your family if you die, so there’s no risk of losing out on your prize money if you’re not expecting to live another 30 years.

+ What time do Powerball draws take place?

Powerball draws occur every Wednesday and Saturday at 22:59 Eastern Time. Because much of the USA observes Daylight Saving Time and South Africa doesn’t, the draw time according to South Africa local time changes at certain points in the year. The table below shows exactly when draws occur throughout the year:

USA Powerball Draw Schedule
Start Date End Date Draw Time In USA Draw Time In South Africa
Second Sunday in March First Sunday in November 22:59 EDT 04:59 SAST
First Sunday in November Second Sunday in March 22:59 EST 05:59 SAST

+ When did Powerball start?

The first USA Powerball draw took place on 22 April 1992, with just 15 states taking part and players required to select five main numbers from 1 to 45, plus a Powerball number from a separate set of 1 to 45.

+ Is there a maximum jackpot?

No. The jackpot starts at $40 million and will keep growing until it is won.

+ What is the biggest prize ever won?

The largest lottery jackpot in history came when three ticket holders – from the states of California, Florida and Tennessee – shared a record $1.58 billion Powerball prize.

+ What is an annuity?

Jackpot winners in the USA have the choice between receiving the prize money in one big upfront payment, or spread out in regular ‘annuity’ payments over 29 years. The cash payout is always less than the annuity, as the interest generated over the 29 years of the annuity is also paid out to the player.

+ Can you win the jackpot from outside the USA?

Yes, third-party lottery betting and concierge websites allow you to participate in Powerball from outside the USA and in both cases you would be eligible to win all the prizes available, including the jackpot. For more information on how it works, visit the page.

+ Is USA Powerball the same as South Africa PowerBall?

No. Although the two games share a common name, they are completely unrelated to each other. The rules of playing, prizes, and odds of winning in both games are different.

PowerPlay

PowerPlay is your chance to boost any non-jackpot prizes you win and it only costs an extra US $1 per ticket. The Power Play is drawn using a random number generator (RNG). One selection is made from a pool of 42 balls, each marked with a multiplier amount: 24 marked 2x, 13 marked 3x, three marked 4x, two marked 5x, and a single 10x multiplier which is added as well if the jackpot for that draw is below US $150 million.

If you win a non-jackpot prize in the main draw, and have selected the Power Play option on your ticket, then you are guaranteed to have your prize increased according to the multiple on the ball drawn — up to an impressive 10x. The only exception to this is if you match five numbers, when the increased prize is fixed at US $2 million.

USA Powerball: How to win & How it works

After purchasing your ticket, pick five random numbers between 1 and 69, these are usually the white balls. Next, pick just one red ball, with the numbers between one and 26. Alternatively, Multilotto assists you in this process with the quick pick feature that makes the random pick for you. If you pick the 6 numbers right, you win the jackpot whose minimum is $40 million. Tickets go for just €3.50 per line. The Powerball draw takes plays every Saturday and Tuesday of the week. The draws are all televised in the states but Multilotto users get to see the results immediately after the completion of the draws.

Apart from the jackpot, the prizes you win are dependent on which numbers you made a correct pick on. If you matched a red and white ball you get a €4 win, you also get the same amount for matching just one red ball right. Matching three white balls guarantees a win of €7 which is the same amount you get for matching one red ball plus two white balls.

Why is the cash option different than the advertised jackpot?

The Powerball jackpot is an estimated 29-year annuity value, with a total 30 payments (the first payment happens right away, followed by 29 annual payments).  When players choose
the annuity option for their prize, the state lottery pays the prize out over 29 years (30 payments) by
buying U.S. Government Treasury Securities, which earn interest and mature annually over
the 29 years.  That annual return is the amount the winners receive each year for the
29 year period.  With the cash option, the state lottery will take the amount of
money that would have been invested and will pay it directly to the winner in one
payment.  Both payment options have federal and applicable state taxes deducted
from them, although with an annuity option you pay taxes gradually on each annual payout, not all at once like with the cash option.
